The Kitchener-Waterloo area in south central Ontario is one of the fastest developing and most economically advantaged regions of Canada. People considering relocating to this community will find just about all big city opportunities you are likely to find in a larger community like Toronto without the hyper fast pace of life, extensive time spent commuting and costly overhead. For example, while Kitchener-Waterloo real estate is currently considered one of the most advantageous purchases in Canada, Waterloo Region real estate prices are still considerably lower than in more populous cities such as Toronto, Mississauga or Ottawa.
The Region of Waterloo is right pretty much in the centre of Southern Ontario, approximately 70 miles or 100 kilometers from Toronto, 100 miles or 160 kilometers from Buffalo, New York, and 185 mi or 300 km from the U.S. border between Windsor and Detroit.
The main geographical feature of the area is the Grand River that runs through its heart and has been a major player in the way the region has developed.
In the 2006 census, the population of Waterloo Region was just over 450,000 and it was the eleventh most populous metro area in Canada. The largest cities in the Region are Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge as well as surrounding towns, villages and rural areas.
Kitchener is the most populous municipality in the region and the seat of the Waterloo Regional Municipality. In the census of 2006 the Kitchener's population was was a shade over 200,000. The City of Waterloo situated right next to Kitchener has a population of just under 100,000. This does not include more than 20,000 non-resident post-secondary students attending classes at its universities and regional colleges. The two cities share a common border and collectively are typically called Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.
The city of Cambridge is located in the southern part of Waterloo Region with a population of just over 120,000. Cambridge was formed in 1973 by the merging of the municipalities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local people felt the merger was a "shotgun marriage" pushed on them by the Province of Ontario.
In the first decade of the new millenium Waterloo Region is one of the most vibrant and fastest growing areas in Canada because it has some of the best farm land in Ontario, two well respected Universities, a very stable financial sector, diversified industrial production and a rapidly expanding high tech sector centered around Research in Motion and numerous spinoff businesses from the region's two univeristies.
Families thinking about settling in the Region will find excellent employment opportunities, an exciting and varied cultural life, and unmatched educational facilities. K-W real estate is also quite a bit cheaper than similar homes in other nearby cities such as Toronto or Ottawa.
Indeed, residents and businesses in Waterloo Region have the best of both worlds. They have the more friendly and pleasant atmosphere found in a smaller urban centre along with the considerable amenities of major urban centres such as Toronto, Mississauga, London and Detroit.
